Knowing When to Fold in Limit Holdem

To win at the game of Texas Holdem a player needs to pick their spots and make the most of them. To play the game in this manner means that you're going to have to lay down a number of hands. So under what circumstance should you fold your cards?

Raising From the Blinds

In the long sad history of bad ideas, raising from the blinds does not really qualify as one of the worst things you can do. It is a better idea than putting your hand in the garbage disposal to see how fast it spins, or dating one of your more attractive cousins, but as a whole it is still not a very good idea.

Playing No Limit Holdem

The difference between Limit Holdem and No Limit Holdem is about the equivalent to the difference between a baloney sandwich and one made with salami. The are both meat products (supposedly), so they share that commonality, but the salami sandwich is a good deal spicier and to be properly enjoyed requires a different approach when it comes to the condiments that will go on it.

Playing Limit Holdem

Those who opt for No Limit Holdem are making the decision to play the Ultimate Fighting Championship of the poker world. Like anything else though, you can't go to the extreme until you know the basics, and those who want to play No Limit Holdem need to have a firm grasp on the Limit game before they enter that particularly bloody arena.

Working With Mid-Range Pocket Pairs

Some things in the game of poker are self-evident. If you your pocket cards are a pair of 2s, you can be reasonably certain that this is a good time for a potty break or a trip to the drink cart. Conversely, if you find yourself holding a pair of Kings or Aces and don't reflexively raise before the flop, you probably don't belong at the poker table anyway. What can be confusing are those middle pairs that may show up in your hand.

Should You Post Your Blind Immediately

When joining a game at a brick-and-mortar casino or its online cousin, the new player is given the burden of posting the Big Blind. Doing this immediately is not mandatory. The choice exists that the player may either pay the Big Blind now and participate immediately, or wait a few hands until it is their natural turn to post the Big Blind.

Fighting for the Blinds Before the Flop

In the game of Texas Holdem we are conditioned to defend our blinds more strenuously than we may fight for other hands. It is, after all, your money sitting in the pot, right? Perhaps under this circumstance you would be more willing to play a hand that you would otherwise fold.

The Power of Tells

When it comes to lying, the body and mind are not on the same page. Our minds find it very easy to be deceptive but the human body treats lying in the same manner that it would react to eating a chili pepper. In short, the mind is willing but the body is weak. This means that when somebody is bluffing, chances their body will somehow betray them and give off subtle clues that the player is not being truthful.
